The UK Wood Heat Industry has never been so active. The Renewable Heat Incentive has driven dramatic growth over the last two years, and the introduction of the domestic RHI next year will bring new challenges and opportunities.

In recent months, a group of wood heat companies from the fuel supply chain and installer base have come together to begin to establish a single trade body to represent our growing industry. These organisations and individuals have freely given their time and money to further this aim.

Our efforts have been in response to the need for effective representation with government in light of recent legislative developments, as well as a desire to help increase quality and professionalism across all parts of the wood heat sector.

We believe the mission of such an organisation – the Wood Heat Association – should be to coordinate, represent, inform, lobby and promote the interests of its members, as directed by the members. It is our intention that the Wood Heat Association should be a non-for-profit organisation, run by the members, for the members.

For several of reasons, not least of which was actually being able to start the association, it has been essential to form a legally constituted company. To that end, a Limited company backed by guarantee has been established.

The initial Directors will stand down once the organisation is securely established, but may put themselves up for re-election subsequently. Our feeling is that it will be 6 months before elections are held.

Those involved in its establishment feel that for the Wood Heat Association to be successful, it must reflect the needs of its prospective members. We believe that individuals and organisations who have been engaged in the formation and establishment of the association are more likely to:

• Be interested members;
• Be active members;
• Recruit other members;
• Be willing to commit their time and resources to furthering the aims of the association;
• Remain members of the organisation over a longer period

This questionnaire is the first step in the process of formally establishing a membership organisation to represent the entire wood heat sector.

Your response to this questionnaire is a genuine opportunity for you to help shape the form and functions of the Wood Heat Association. In time, we believe that this approach will lead to the creation of a strong and representative body that will be to the benefit of all members and the wider industry.
